Jacob Hamil
I am a first year masters student under Dr. Allison Wing. I graduated from the University of Georgia in three years with a B.S. in Atmospheric Science, a B.A./B.S. in Geography, and a certificate in Geographic Information Systems.
I am a lifelong North Georgia resident, but I’ve spent a lot of time in the Tallahassee area. I have known from a young age that I had an interest in meteorology. This was all kick-started by a winter storm that impacted my hometown. Curiosity filled my brain on how this event happened, which led me down the meteorology rabbit hole. Alongside my interest in meteorology, I also love mathematics, so when I found out the two are fundamentally rooted together, I desired a career in meteorology even more. From there, I graduated salutatorian of my high school class and went off to the University of Georgia to pursue these passions.
During my time at UGA, I knew that I wanted a research career, though I hadn’t yet identified a specialty. Working with climate models to examine how key tropical cyclone parameters change under different warming scenarios, along with researching the Madden-Julian Oscillation with Dr. Naoko Sakaeda through the NWC REU, ultimately guided me towards tropical meteorology.
Outside of Grad School, I am actively involved in the American Meteorological Society, serving on both the Student Conference Planning Committee and the Specialty Meeting Events Committee. In my free time, I love reading, listening to music, taking beach drives, spending time with friends, and playing pickleball.
