Current Research

My current research in the Libraries and Innovative Technologies Study focuses on understanding more about how libraries are using social media and other new technologies in outreach, advocacy, and information services. Does your library use social media and other new technologies? If so, you may be interested in the short survey at this link:

https://fsu.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_eDS1omjbMsa7GxD or for a short link:

Interested in library advocacy and market area demographic research on users of your library? You'll find tools for running reports on library market areas, or creating your own custom market areas, at the iMapLibraries web site: http://imaplibraries.org/, including our white paper on this research. You can also find our iMapLibraries blog at http://imaplibraries.wordpress.com in which we used Miami Dade public library market area reports.

Research Overview

My research focuses on digital intermediation, and how technological change is impacting help-seeking interactions as they increasingly move into online venues such as chat, e-mail, instant messaging, SMS text messaging, social media, and virtual worlds. I also explore the "flip side" of digital intermediation which is disintermediation - for example, automated question intake systems, searchable archives of answered questions, and FAQs. The rise of the "virtual branch" in libraries, and of "e-government" online information and services, are all part of how digital intermediation is changing information interactions in our society.

IPL2

The Internet Public Library (IPL2) is a digital library and digital reference service that functions as an online learning laboratory for LIS faculty and graduate students nationwide. Supported by an IMLS research grant, we worked to expand the capacity of IPL2, including building a learning community site with a blogging community, wiki and other resources to support teaching and learning.
