Travel by Air(PDF)
Athens
Ben Epps Airport (AHN) (http://www.athensairport.net/) is served by U.S. Air with
limited daily flights to and from their hub in Charlotte (CLT). Airfare is
usually expensive, but it's tough to beat the convenience. Rental cars are
available from Hertz.
Most
Athens residents use Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) (http://www.atlanta-airport.com/), which is served by all
major airlines and all major rental car companies. The drive to Athens from the
Atlanta airport is 90 minutes (plus traffic). A regular shuttle service between
the Atlanta airport and major Athens hotels is provided by AAA Airport Express
(http://www.aaaairportexpress.com/) for $40 each way. Renting
a car is generally more economical, especially if you can share the rental with
other conference attendees.
Because
public transportation in Athens is very limited, you will find it most
convenient to have your own vehicle. The campus is very large, and there are no
restaurants within walking distance of the Music building. Parking on campus is
free on Saturday, and will be free to conference registrants on Friday.

Driving
directions to campus can be found on the UGA website at
style='font-family:Helvetica;color:black'>http://www.uga.edu/visit/directions.html. You should follow these
directions until you turn onto College Station Road. Then:
1.
Turn right at the first light after the Perimeter overpass, onto River Road.
2.
You will pass a large parking structure on your left, and a large dormitory
complex on your right. Immediately after this, bear right at the split.
3.
The construction site for the new School of Art building will be immediately in
front of you. The School of Music is the building just after that on the left.
Parking is available in E11 (on the left) and E07 (on the right).
Several
good campus maps can be found at http://www.camplan.uga.edu/currentcampusmaps.html. The Hugh Hodgson School of
Music is in the southeast quadrant of the campus.
Mapquest
directions aren't always reliable. However, for those who like such things, the
address of the Music Building is 250 River Road.
Driving
to UGA from the Atlanta Airport:
The
most direct route is to take I-85 North from the airport, through downtown
Atlanta, and out into suburbia. Take Exit 106, for Georgia Highway 316 (signs
will say Lawrenceville and Athens). 316 is a four-lane highway with stop
lights. The first several miles are a notorious speed trap, so paying attention
to posted limits is highly recommended. You can then follow the directions on
the UGA directions webpage ("traveling east: GA 316").
An
alternate route, which is a bit more complicated, is recommended if you are
arriving at times when driving through downtown Atlanta would be undesirable
(i.e., rush hour). A good map of this alternate route appears at http://www.camplan.uga.edu/pdf/CurrentMaps/UGAtoAirport.pdf. (Once you are on US Highway
78, you can follow the directions "traveling east: US 78.")

Thursday Evening Cash-Bar Reception
On Thursday, 15 March, at about 7:30 p.m., there will be an informal cash-bar reception in three bars/restaurants, almost adjacent to each other, opposite the main gates of the university. All three have separate bars within the restaurants, and all three serve good food at reasonable prices (most entrees around $10), if you wanted to combine dinner with drink and talk.
Harry Bissett, 279 E. Broad St (New Orleans cuisine)
East-West, 351 E. Broad St (Asian/American fusion)
De Palma's, 401 E. Broad St (Italian)
Broad St runs east-west at the northern boundary of the UGA campus. The restaurants are a five-minute walk from the Holiday Inn (197 E. Broad St), ten to fifteen-minute walk from the Holiday Inn Express (513 W. Broad St) and a fifteen-minute walk from the Georgia Center (walk north on Lumpkin and turn right on Broad). Those with cars can try for street parking (free evenings), since most of the students will be away, this being Spring Break. Several nearby university parking lots (1 block south-west of the restaurants) are free after 5:00 pm. We hope to see many of you there.
