RESEARCH: Western Tropical South Pacific
Work in the Western Tropical South Pacific as part of the
OUTPACE project has identified
significant rates of N2 fixation, especially proximal to
iron sources. Additionally, in the large volume mesocosm experiment
("VAHINE"),
we identified novel, "smoking-gun" evidence for the release of
dissolved nitrogen by diazotrophs that then fueled export production
by other phytoplankton. Collaborations with French colleagues Sophie
Bonnet and Cecile Guieu have continued, and we are analyzing samples
they collected for us on the TONGA project
