Being that I use Google on a daily basis, I found it humorous that someone entitled this OP-ED, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” It seems as though I have become more and more dependent on Google as each day progresses. I did not realize that until I read this piece. It is evident that for everything that I need more information on, I immediately turn to the internet—more often than not, Google. It was indeed something to think about. The question that was left in the air to be answered was, “what is the internet doing to our brains?” As noted in this article, I agree with the point that was made about how I do not think the same way that I used to. I am more willing how to look up information on the internet verses actually thinking about the topic and trying to figure things out on my own. It is ridiculously addicting, furthermore. It is the easiest route to just look up some information and not having to worry about doing the extra work to accommodate one’s time. In retrospect, it makes more sense to complete a task that way, however, it makes the mind very lazy.
I think this article was insightful as far as opening the minds and digging in deeply on the topic of how the internet is affecting today’s generation. I totally with Nicholas Carr when he quoted, “For more than a decade now, I’ve been spending a lot of time online, searching and surfing and sometimes adding to the great databases of the Internet. The Web has been a godsend to me as a writer.” Because the internet is such an outlet to most of its users, it is used as an advantage. I just do not know where I would be if the internet was nonexistent.
