Franklin County Information



History

Franklin County was formed from a portion of Escambia County in 1832 and named for Benjamin Franklin. Spanish explorer Narvaez visited the area near present-day Apalachicola in 1527. Dr. John Gorrie built the first ice-making machine in 1845 to use in the treatment of patients with high feaver in Apalachicola. The port of Apalachicola was also a major cotton shipping point until the Civil War.
