In the fall of 1991 Thursday morning basketball was started at Florida State among the history department graduate students and a few faculty members. At first we played outside at the courts between Montgomery Gym and Woodward Street. Soon, because of the ungodly heat, even in the morning, we moved inside to the Leach Center. The inaugural crowd, so far as I remember, was Neil Jumonville, Burton Kirkwood, David Proctor, Jay Tapp, Llew Cook, and a few others. Over the years the crowd changed, but so far all but a scant few have made it into the Thursday Morning Hall of Fame. Below are some of the more memorable players. Well, okay, they're the ones who I can still remember at my age. Please email me with other names I've forgotten. The basketball stopped in the summer of 2002, about the time I became chair of the history department. SCROLL BELOW FOR ROSTER.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Thursday morning basketball has been a weekly
tradition since Gordon Hylton and I started it at Harvard in 1982 among
the American Civilization and the History graduate students. We played
from about 8 am until 9:30--sometimes
at the law school gym, sometimes at the IAB (MAC), and sometimes on the
outside courts near Dunster House. Some of those who played over the years
were: Neil Jumonville, Gordon Hylton, Greg "the Claw" Pfitzer, David Leviatin,
Marc Forster, Jonathan Veitch, Vince Thomkins, Chandos Brown, David Watt,
Russ Sizemore, Jeff Adler, Tim Spears, Tom Siegel, Jon Petropoulos, Peter
Mancall, Robert Aguirre, Steve Biel, Eric Hinderacher, Mark Peterson, Tom Price, Mark Hirsch,
Fran MacDonnell, Brian Balough--and many others I've forgotten. When I
left Harvard in the spring of 1990 it was still going.
