THE CARAMELIZED RUNNER

As far as the time line goes, this particular incident took place after Starr was banished and just before Imago. However, the time line doesn’t really matter as long as you accept the fact that three of the characters had more Karma than was necessarily good for the universe. And that the job still didn’t get done.

It started as a simple job. Get a box to Denver. Charon, the Minotaur Rigger was the one contracted for the job. He contacted Lena and Warder for assistance. When loading his Bison he discovered that he had plenty of room, not only for plenty of cargo, but for two additional passengers - paying passengers. Specifically, a Rastifarian and a Magicker who was as experienced as Lena and Warder.

Cruising though Iowa, our five brave adventurers were headed east when they were spotted by a group of highjackers. Drones were sent up by both sides and shot down. Gunfire ensued and I believe it was at that point we lost the Rastifarian. Warder and Lena were firing at the highjackers and having limited success. The highjackers were doing better, and it was definitely at that point that certain portions of said cargo were fatally injured. The Magicker was protected by Lena’s instinct to cover the shaman (she was hanging out with Anderson too much.)

The whole thing climaxed with the Bison and the highjackers’ vehicle headed straight for each other in a terrifying game of chicken. Both the Rastifarian and Charon were down. Unfortunately, Charon had locked the Bison on this course and put the pedal down before he was stunned. The front window of the other vehicle was out and a lucky shot had taken out their driver - unfortunately locking their vehicle on the same course. An anti-personnel grenade went through the window and into the body of their vehicle where it exploded.

The two vehicles crashed at a combined speed of over 70 miles per hour. Warder, Lena and the Magicker spent over thirty Karma in the crash test (reality warped) and the only injury done to those three was Lena’s broken nail. Warder went leaping through the destroyed windows of both vehicles and into the body of the other van. Seeing nothing but chunky salsa, and smelling nothing but smoke . . . SMOKE! . . . Warder retraced his steps yelling at everyone to get out of the vehicles. Through the generous use of more karma, Charon (who was just waking up) got the two vehicles unstuck and put the Bison in reverse at a roll while Lena and the Magicker got Charon and the Rastafarian out of the Bison before the other van exploded. Warder was not quite as quick. Soaked in the Slushy Syrup which had started shooting out of its boxes when they were shot, he was caught in the fire ball as the rival vehicle went up. He spent more Karma and avoided the damage. (In total, the three characters spent 67 Karma in one round) The GM’s ruling was that the Slushy syrup had instantly caramelized in the heat, protecting Warder from being seriously burned. (Although he did lose his eyebrows to the caramel).

With no working vehicle and a mission that was definitely hosed. Lena called home to Anderson to ask him to send some new transportation. He astrally projected to check on her, since she was giggling hysterically as she placed the request. He manifested, she told that she had broken a nail, confused Daniel expressed his sympathy. Then Lena explained the rest of the story and Daniel saw Warder. Daniel started to laugh, then disappeared only to reappear with Y, one of Warder’s contacts from his legitimate life. Y laughed so hard that she popped off and fetched Warder’s sister who also manifested astrally and started laughing over the incident. The story eventually carried to the point where you can tell who was "in" at that time by noting who laughs at any mention of Cherry Bomb flavored Slushies or caramel. (Oh yeah. Anderson sent a vehicle to get Lena and Warder and bring them back to Seattle. One of Charon’s contacts in Denver sent a vehicle to fetch Charon, the Magicker, the Rastifarian, and the package, which had also been decorated with Slushy syrup, but was otherwise unhurt.)
