The Professor & the Mechanics kicked off the Winter 2001 season last night at the Hobbit.  In a subdivision of only 3 teams, P&M will face FUBAR four times this season.  We play next week against Kelly's Bitches, the other member of the subdivision.  The entire Division 1 is comprised of 6 teams.  We play each of the Division 1B teams one time.  Last night, P&M could only wish that we could qualify for the lower division as we gave a lackluster performance against the strong FUBAR darters.  Leroy provided our only spark in singles, as he defeated Duski in two games.  Erik, Bill, & Andrew were all swept by Ish, Greg, & Lewis.  In doubles, the teams split:  Erik & Leroy won 2-0 while Bill & Andrew fell by the same margin.  We were only down by 4 going into team 601, and after upsetting FUBAR in the first game, we had a chance to pull out the tie.  But, FUBAR smoked us in the second game, and won the third game closely to win by 5.  That we only lost by 5 despite not playing up to our capability gives us promise for a successful season.

The Professor & the Mechanics suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Kelly's Bitches last night at the Salty Dawg.  The only brights spots were Erik's victory in singles, and Bill & Andrew's win in doubles.  The hammer fell in the first game of 601 when KB hit the game-winner after P&M couldn't finish.  This led to a collapse in the final game of the evening for the final embarrasing margin.  The night began with Andrew, Bill, & Leroy being swept by Kelly, Ernie, & Glenn.  Erik won in three to keep P&M breathing.  The two teams played evenly in doubles as Bill & Andrew won in three, while Leroy & Erik lost in three.  Though hope was lost for a victory, we felt confident that we could finish the night with two victories.  This would have closed the final margin to a single point.  The opposite happened, and Kelly & Co left us picking up the pieces.

The Professor & the Mechanics recovered from a dismal singles performance to collect our first victory of the Winter 2001 season.  It was looking pretty glum in Quincy, Florida after Erik, Andrew, & Leroy lost in three to Beth, Tex, & Rachael, while Bill was swept by Travis.  But, P&M dominated in doubles and four man to pull out the two point win.  Bill & Andrew extended their winning streak to two matches by sweeping, while Leroy & Erik took two of three.  That closed the gap from an 8-3 deficit to 9-7.  We tied the match in the first game of 601 ... finally hitting the out after both teams struggled for several rounds.  With a racious karaoke crowd in the background, P&M won the 2nd game to complete the turnaround.  We'll take the week off to celebrate Valetine's Day, and continue on the 21st.

The Professor & the Mechanics returned to action, and after a sluggish start, won our second consecutive match.  We began the evening with Leroy & Erik picking up wins over Stu & Donna, while Bill & Andrew fell to David & Joe.  We found ourselves losing by a point after singles.  Like we often do, P&M regrouped ... only dropping one point during the rest of the match.  That point achieved by DDT was a 601 victory over Bill & Andrew, who rebounded to win both cricket games for the 2-1 win.  Erik & Leroy swept their doubles match.  In team 601, P&M dominated both games for the 4-0 sweep, and achieved the final margin of 6 points.  To prove how big P&M darts has become ... former FSU wideout & current Cincinnati Bengal, Peter Warrick, attended the pre-match warmups.  Though he pretended to shoot pool with friends while waiting for his food order, we all know that he was watching & evaluating our darts.

Last night at the Hobbit, The Professor & the Mechanics won our third consecutive match, this time over the upstart Shaft's 3rd Erection.  In singles, we jumped out to a big lead on the skilled, but inexperienced team - who are making their Division 1 debut this season.  We split doubles and won 2 of 3 in 601.  To start the evening, Andrew, Leroy, & Erik all won in sweeps over Mike, Leo, & Pat, while Bill fell to Dave.  This gave us a 4 point lead going into doubles.  Bill & Andrew continued their streak by winning in two games, while Leroy & Erik lost by the same margin.  Going into 4-man, we knew that we were assured of at least a tie.  That not being good enough, P&M dominated the first game, hitting the out just before allowing S3E to come back.  We dropped the second game, but came back to win the rubber game behind our captain, Bill, who got us on in all three games.  The win will move us up to at least 3rd place in the division.  Next week, we travel to the Crawfordville Highway Hobbit to challenge FUBAR.

The Professor & the Mechanics picked a bad night to play their worst darts of the season.  The first-placed FUBAR had no mercy for our struggles, and pounded us like they had a vendetta.  P&M was skunked by the Tallahassee All-Star team in doubles & four man, and managed only two points in singles.  Accordingly, our bonus points were also miserable.  The only bright spot for us was Leroy winning his singles match in three games over Duski (and his practice game win over Ish).  Andrew, Bill, & Erik were all swept by Greg, Ish, & Lewis.  Bill & Andrew & Erik & Leroy were taken down brutally in doubles, and we didn't stand a chance in 601.  All this misery left us with a 15-2 drubbing, which will drop us in the standings a minimum of one place (from 3rd to 4th).  We'll try to regroup next week against the second placed team.

The Professor & the Mechanics suffered another drubbing last night ... this time to the second placed Kelly's Bitches.  Though we played considerably better than last week, the result was nearly the same.  In singles, Bill defeated Ernie in 3 games, Erik managed to take a game from Glen, while Andrew & Leroy were swept by Kelly & Dave.  In doubles ... Bill & Andrew lost in 3 while Erik & Leroy lost by the same margin.  We entered 601 down by 6, but very confident in the way we were shooting.  We led both 601 games all the way down to the out, but found a way to lose each.  The loss demoralized P&M as we shot very decent.  We have a bye week next Wednesday before playing FUBAR in a redemption game.

After a week off, The Professor & the Mechanics returned to play with a renewed sense of urgency.  Unfortunately, we ran into a hot-shooting FUBAR team.  None-the-less, P&M battled toe-to-toe with the all-stars, and had a chance to close to a one-point loss at the end.  The shot didn't fall, and like all good teams do, FUBAR made us pay.  The night started off with Andrew & Leroy stealing a game apiece from Ish & Greg in singles.  Bill fell to Lewis in two, while Erik topped Duski in both games.  In doubles, Bill & Andrew lost in two; Leroy & Erik took one game out of three.   This left us trailing 10-5 going into 4-man.  The first game saw P&M dominate FUBAR, taking the out effortlessly.  This closed the gap to 10-7.  The second game was nip & tuck all the way, and we had a chance for the out to sweep 601, and lose 10-9.  Shouldas, Wouldas, Couldas.  Andrew narrowly missed, and FUBAR pounced on the opportunity ... winning the second & third games for the 6 point win.  We play the second-placed Kelly's Bitches next week at the Salty Dawg.

After losing to Kelly's Bitches by scores of 14-5 & 15-5 already this season, the fact that the Professor & the Mechanics battled Kelly's Bitches is an accomplishment.  But, P&M left the Salty Dawg discouraged that we didn't beat KB.  Afterall, we led the entire match until 601.  We started off beating the second-place Bitches 6-5 in singles ... Erik beat Kelly in 2, Andrew beat Dave 2-1, Leroy fell to Ernie in 3, and Bill lost to Glenn 2-1.  The two teams played even in doubles with Erik & Leroy winning 2-1, while Bill & Andrew lost 2-1.  That gave us with a narrow lead, but a lead none-the-less.  We quickly lost the 1 point lead in the first game of 4-man.  The second game was ours for the taking, however.  We led by a couple of hundred points, but couldn't close the game.  KB had little trouble hitting the out after catching up.  The loss was disheartening, but P&M showed up for the second consecutive week.  We play our next 3 matches against division 1B teams, so hopefully we can pick up some wins (and some confidence).  Beth will substitute for Andrew next week against Animal Crackers at the Capital Pub.

While the Professor took a vacation last week, the Mechanics, with Beth as a substitute, defeated the Animal Crackers 14-4.  Upon his return, P&M continued the winning trend ... defeating Salty Dawg DDT by the same score.  Last night at the Breakroom, we started the evening a little sluggish, but finished strong ... we didn't lose any of the doubles or 4-man games.  In singles Andrew won 2-1 over Donna, Erik won by the same score over Joe, Leroy swept Jeff, & David beat Bill in 2.  Doubles saw Andrew & Bill and Leroy & Erik win in sweeps.  We dominated both games of 601 to finish the shellacking.  P&M travels to Poor Paul's next week to finish the non-division schedule.  The final two weeks will be against league foes.

Though the Professor & the Mechanics fell to the 3rd placed Shaft's 3rd Erection last night at Poor Paul's, we threw fairly well, and weren't entirely disappointed with our effort.  We played even with the upstart Erections in singles.  Erik swept Pat, Andrew won in 3 over Lao, Leroy fell in 3 to Mike, and Bill was swept by Dave.  In doubles, each team lost their match in 3 games.  That left us down by 2 going into 601.  We lost the first game which dropped us to a 4 point deficit, thus icing the loss.  However, in the second 601 game, P&M threw what could have been our best team game all season ... if not ever.  In only 8 turns, P&M took out the game ... our darts included a 100 in & a 121 by Erik, a 140 and a 10 by Leroy, a narrowly missed in & a 74 by Bill, and a 85 & a 71 out by Andrew.  We dropped the final 601 game in a heartbreaker to make the final margin.  Next week, we play the first placed FUBAR at the Salty Dawg in the 2nd-to-last match of the season.

The Professor & the Mechanics couldn't mount a challenge whatsoever to FUBAR, the 1st placed, all-star team.  Andrew won 2 games in singles to post the only points of the evening.  We play the 2nd placed Kelly's Bitches next week at the Capital Pub for our season finale.

It would have been tough to find a better way to finish the season and send Bill happily into semi-retirement.  Last night at the Capital Pub, the Professor & the Mechanics pulled off an upset over the second placed Kelly's Bitches at the Capital Pub.  The two teams played evenly in singles and doubles before P&M dominated the 601 games for the four point victory.  In singles, Andrew & Erik won sweeps over Ernie & Kelly while Bill fell to Dave, & Leroy fell to Glenn ... both in two games.  Doubles saw Erik & Leroy win in 2, while Bill & Andrew lost in 2.  That left the teams tied at 6 going into 4-man.  In what was a retrospective evening anyway, P&M reached back into our past ... where sweeping 601 games to win matches was commonplace ... to beat back the stunned KB.  The Professor & the Mechanics finished the unsuccessful, yet enjoyable season on a high note.  Next season will bring a new look, as Bill has resigned himself to be a substitute for a couple of seasons.
