The Un-official Home Page for Chris Weinke's Successful Drive for the 2000 Heisman Trophy and a near 3rd National Championship for Bobby and the Noles

This Week's Synopsis (click here for season archive)

All is right with the world.   The best player in college football has won the Heisman Trophy.   A very humbled Chris Weinke accepted the award in honor of the entire team.   In his acceptance speech, he said, "I didn't set this as one of my goals.  My goals have always been geared to the team.  This is a reflection of the success our team has had this year."

He also thanked the great coaches, players, fans & doctors at Florida State, saying, "I would like to thank coach Bowden for the opportunity.  He had said many times that the small print said after a couple of years you can come back (from professional baseball), not seven.  All the coaches at Florida State, especially coach (Mark) Richt, who not only taught me the X's and O's but became a great friend of mine.  The players, those guys are the reason I'm standing up here -- the big guys up front, Snoop (Minnis) and the receiving corps and the most underrated tailback in the country, Travis Minor.  And the defense that put me in good position every time I was on the field.  One of the reasons I came back was to be able to play in front of the best fans in the country.

"I also want to thank the trainers and doctors, without them, I don't know if I would be up here today.  They're going to be glad when I'm out of here.  Individual awards are not as important as team accomplishments.  The most exciting experience of my life was helping my teammates win a national championship last year.  Nothing is as rewarding or fun as winning a championship, or two."

Congratulations to Chris Weinke for making Florida State University proud!

"Who'll finish second?" Tracker
Weinke may have iced the Heisman with his performance against the Gators. Josh Heupel, in a chance to win the award in the Big XII championship, did not impress, and finished the season with 4 consecutive sub-par games. The Seminole & Sooners will be able to prove who has the best signal caller when they square off in the Orange Bowl for the national championship. The early line? FSU by 11.

2. Josh Heupel Josh & the Sooners pulled out another victory ... this one against Kansas St in the Big XII championship. Josh is a great out-of-nowhere contender for the award, but he'll have to be satisfied with second place, and a trip to NYC.

Final Season Stats Mindblower  ( NCAA stats)
Weinke led the nation in passing yards. In fact, the closest competitor, Jared Lorenzen of Kentucky is 480 yards behind with 128 more attempts. Weinke finished as the only quarterback in the nation with over 4,000 yards. As for his Heisman competition, Weinke beat Heupel by 775 yards with 14 less completions. He has quite a few more TD passes as Josh (33-20), while Josh has thrown more interceptions (14-11). Weinke's QB efficiency tops Heupel's by a rank of 163.1 (number 2 nationally) to 139.2 (number 14 nationally). But, more importantly, Weinke has put the Noles in position to prove who has the better quarterback. The Noles are 11-1 & will play Heupel & Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. I wonder who would be favored in that game? For a clue, review last year's national championship game where Weinke led the Noles to a conclusion of their first undefeated season, culminating with a victory over another overrated quarterback.
