STATMAN HOOPS 2005-06© 2005
an Automated Basketball Stats Program

The Improved Statman Hoops is back for a second year!

Last year's version was whipped together after receiving numerous requests to develop a basketball version of Statman.   While efficient, I was not completely satisfied.  This year, I sat down and spent some time improving the program to rival Statman for football. The premise of Statman - basketball is much like that of the football version ... entering basic play-by-play information into an Excel spreadsheet to achieve detailed statistics in report, pdf or html form.  Now, I have added season statistics capability, a play-by-play summary, and numerous other upgrades.

Statman was designed by an experienced football and basketball statistician and proficient spreadsheet developer to be used with Excel software.  But, regardless of your Excel skill level, you will find Statman to be user-friendly, thorough, and accurate.  The detailed, yet concise reports can easily be disseminated on the world wide web or simply printed out on the spot.  Charts and graphs reflecting the compiled statistics are also available using the football program.

Who will use Statman Hoops 2005-06?
I expect my customer base for basketball to be near the same as my football base . . . mostly high school statisticians, coaches, boosters, fans, parents, athletic directors, scouts, and high school media (radio, internet and newspaper). But, anyone from top level professional stat crews down to junior varsity level and below can use it.  All you need is a computer and an Excel program.

Who developed Statman Hoops 2005-06 and why?
My name is Andrew Brady.  I have worked on the stat crew for all Florida State Seminole home football games since 1996 and basketball games (men and women) since 2003.  My role on the stat crew has been spotting and providing back-up for the data-entry guy, and lately running the NCAA software.  If there is one thing that the basketball software has in common with football it is that both are very difficult to use, even for a professional!  My software is the remedy for those who don't have to use the mandated NCAA software!

Does the program include season stats? Yes! Statman Hoops 2005-06 now includes season stats for up to 30 games!

What sort of stats does Statman Hoops 2005-06 keep?
I could list them, but it would be easier to put sample output reports on the web.  Link below for a sample box score. I used the 1/18/05 FSU upset of Wake Forest as the sample. All stats displayed are generated by the program:

Sample Output - Game Box Score in HTML format
Sample Output - Game Box Score in PDF format
Sample Output - Play-by-Play Summary in PDF format
Sample Output - Play-by-Play Summary in HTML format

How much does Statman Hoops 2005-06 cost?
Statman Hoops 2005-06, complete with season stats and numerous other upgrades costs only $25.  Why is the program so cheap?  Developing the Statman software is quickly becoming an enjoyable hobby for me. Now with football and basketball done, I hope to one day start work on baseball!  I accept PayPal or check.  Click here to order now (program can be downloaded from this site).   If you are not satisfied with Statman Hoops 2005-06, let me know within 30 days, and I will return your money.

Can I try it before I buy it?
Yes, for a limited time, I'll make a trial version of Statman Hoops 2005-06 available. Everything will be the same in the trial version, except you will only be allowed to enter a maximum of 50 plays.

Click here for information on downloading the trial version.

Is Statman Basketball difficult to use?
No.  Statman is very user-friendly.  All instructions, helpful hints, and cheat sheets are included in the program, but here's what you do in a nutshell:  Before the season, the statistician will enter his team's roster and schedule. For each game, he/she will enter the opponent's roster.  Most of the work is done!  Throughout the game, the user simply enters the action (shot, rebound, steal, etc.) and the program does the rest. Optionally, you can enter substitutes/times to generate minutes played. Like football, if something isn't right (whether it's your error or just a very strange play), you can simply overwrite the formula in any field to make it right.  Other programs don't allow you this feature.  On those programs, the user is required to get it right in order to proceed.  This is how you fall behind.

What are the minimum requirements for my system to run this software?
It hasn't been tested on every operating class, but it should work fine with nearly any processor. Statman Basketball should be used by licensed owners of Excel (preferably Excel 97 or better, but probably older versions as well). It works fine on either on Mac or PC, and some users have used it with a handheld device equipped with Excel.
