CALCULATIONS FOR FINAL GRADES

Grades during the semester are nearly always on the FSU 4.00 numeric scale. Thus an A is 4.00, an A- is a 3.75, a B+ is 3.25 and so forth. This grading scale is used for the three small projects, your presentation and the reflective paper. Grading rubrics for all these assignments will be separately posted to Blackboard.

Each quiz score is numeric, with a mximum score of 30 per quiz. I add your top two scores*; these are nearly always the team scores, because the team scores are typically higher than the individual scores (see Overview on TBL). The quiz total has a maximum score of 60. Total quiz scores of 56-60 are an A, 51-55 scores are an A-, total scores of 46-50 are a B+ and so on.

*If you have missed a quiz or assignment, I can only use two quiz scores and two small project grades, rather than the highest two of each.

There are two examples below of how the weighted scores are combined into a final total score. The fractional components below are the weighting proportions for the assignments.

Example One: Suppose your Quiz Total and Team Assignment Total were each an A (4.0), your presentation and team self-assessment were each an A (4.0) and your Reflective Paper was an A (4.0). Your total would be 4 * .25 + 4 * .25 + 4 * .25 + 4 * .05 + 4 * .20 = 4.00 (an A).

For a second example, suppose your Quiz Total was 60 or a 4.0, your projects' average was a 3.875 (an A/A-), your presentation and team self-assessment were each 4.0 (an A) and your reflective paper was a 3.5 (A-/B+). Your total would be 4 * .25 + 3.875 * .25 + 4 * .25 + 4 * .05 + 3.5 * .20  = 3.869 or an A-.

The typical cutoff average for an A is 3.90.

If a student's final total is in between grades (e.g., an A and an A-), I will also examine class participation and attendance in making a final decision.

Please be aware that I do not use percentages at any time in grading. Although I am open to talk with you privately about your grades, I use and adhere to a consistent grading system for all students. Please avoid trying to discuss your grades with me during class or during class break. I'll be glad to go over assignments or grades with you after class or during my office hours. If that time isn't possible fort you, we can make a mutually available alternative appointment.
