YOUR FOCUS GROUP BASICS

1. Describe the topic of your focus group.

2. Describe the focal population for your focus group. How many groups will you consider using and what will be the size of each group? Why is this population an appropriate one for your topic?

3. Describe how you will recruit your focus group participants. Be sure to consider how you will ensure diversity on the topic while preventing intimidation by some participants. Also describe any inducements to participate, their appropriateness, and any logistical considerations for participants.

4. Describe the location where your focus group will take place and how you will ensure that this is an effective location.

5. How long do you plan to have your group(s) meet? Why?

CONDUCTING YOUR FOCUS GROUP

5. What personnel will you need for your focus group(s)? Which tasks will each member of your team perform?

6. Prepare a dozen questions that you will use for your focus group. Be sure to use good rules for question construction.

HINTS: Are open or closed questions better to use for a focus group? Why? How do your questions compare to these criteria?

7. How will you record data for your focus group(s)? What logistical problems is it wise to foresee in recording data?

8. Briefly describe TWO DIFFERENT PROBLEMS that can arise while the focus group is in session. Briefly describe how you will handle each problem.
