EDF 5481 METHODS OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH
INSTRUCTOR: DR. SUSAN CAROL LOSH
FALL 2017

Several federal and state organizations collect data, archive data, and create and maintain data archives. Each organization sponsors several archives. Some have tutorials, some do not. Some provide considerable documentation for each archive, some do not.

Sites at the Florida Department of Education are useful for  individuals who may want to learn about or even do research at some point with the Leon County School system (or at some other county in Florida). Divided into elementary, middle, and high schools, you can access basic demographics for each County's schools and for each particular school, as well as average test scores on several standardized tests (e.g., Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test--FCAT and Terra Nova), number of school suspensions (as a disciplinary measure), percent of students in gifted programs and other information. If you will study only one (or at best two) school[s], it may be better to use a purposive (judgment) sample to select a school close to the county averages. These sites will help you in that goal.

RETURN OF A NICE AND REVISED SITE!

The following database not only contains information on Florida Public schools, but also potentially about schools across the country. Particularly useful for individuals who wish to do some form of school on-site study. It is also useful to find out the state and the school district averages on a variety of variables, such as teacher degree levels, absentee rates, or suspensions for researchers who want to know what is "typical" for a particular district. Comparison of schools is possible.

AND remember the University of Michigan's Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) which ALSO has educational databases as well as everything else.
