Dr. Robert A. Reiser is the Associate Dean for Research, a Distinguished Teaching Professor and the Robert M. Morgan Professor of Instructional Systems in the College of Education at Florida State University. Reiser joined the Florida State faculty in January 1976, shortly after receiving his doctorate in Educational Technology from Arizona State University.
Dr. Reiser has written four books in the field of instructional design and technology. These have included Selecting Media for Instruction (written with Robert M. Gagne), Planning Effective Instruction and Instructional Planning: A Guide for Teachers (both written with Walter Dick). His most recent book is the third edition of Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology (2012), edited with John V. Dempsey. Previous editions of this book have received the James W. Brown Publication Award, the premier book award presented by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), as well as the Outstanding Book Award presented by the AECT Division of Design and Development, and the Outstanding Human Performance Communication Award presented by the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI).
Dr. Reiser has written more than seventy journal articles and book chapters on instructional design and technology. Over his career, his research interests and publications have focused on a wide variety of topics, including technology integration in K-12 settings, improving the instructional planning practices of teachers, the instructional effectiveness of educational software, the effects of Sesame Street on children’s learning, media selection techniques, the effects of mastery learning, and improving the instructional design process.
Dr. Reiser’s service activities have included serving as program leader of the Instructional Systems program for six years and serving as chairman of the Department of Educational Research at Florida State University for nine years, during which time he received the highest faculty rating of any chairman in the university. At the international level, Dr. Reiser is a board member of the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction. He also founded the AECT Division for Design and Development Awards Program and served for 25 years as chairman of the awards committee. He has also served for 20 years as an editorial board member of Educational Technology Research and Development, a premier research journal in the field of instructional design and technology. In recognition of his service efforts, the AECT Division of Design and Development has presented Dr. Reiser with its annual Presidential Award for Outstanding Service on four separate occasions.
During the 35 years he has been at Florida State, Dr. Reiser has received several university awards, including a Professorial Excellence Award, a Developing Scholar Award and a University Teaching Award. In April 2000, Dr. Reiser received the University Distinguished Teacher Award, the highest teaching award at Florida State. Each year this award is given to one faculty member at Florida State who has, over his or her career, demonstrated a record of sustained teaching excellence. Dr. Reiser is the first member of the College of Education to have received this award.
