Research Projects My research focuses on institutional and policy choices in democracies and how these choices affect democratic performance and sustainability. This interest extends across two subfields – comparative politics and public policy. The questions within each of these strands of research reflect fundamental problems that all democracies must confront Regime Transitions The first strand of my research is concerned with the institutional choices that enhance the stability of democratic regimes. Why do some democracies survive while others fail? What types of institutional choices might provide democracies protection against breakdown in the face of relatively difficult circumstances? Policy Delivery/Delegation The second strand of my research agenda focuses on how democracies resolve the dilemmas of the delegation problem within the realm of public policy delivery. What tactics do elected officials use to ensure that unelected bureaucrats implement their policy preferences? What are the policy implications of these tactics?	Teaching Interests My teaching includes a variety of undergraduates courses including research methods, environmental politics, comparative politics, and U.S. state politics. At the graduate level I have recently offered courses on introductory mathematics for political scientists, environmental politics and policy, regime change, and comparative public policy.
